Aviation Accident Investigation Process
Aviation accidents are perhaps the most devastating form of transportation disaster. Hundreds of victims and families are traumatized, chances of survival are often slim, and damage to the aircraft can be complete to the point of rendering analysis of the accident impossible.
At the Hershewe Law Firm, P.C., we focus on litigating aviation accidents. We understand the process of investigating aviation accidents, and how best to put the information gathered from that investigative process to work for your case.
Investigating aviation accidents
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) performs just about every investigation of an aviation accident in the United States. This organization often works in conjunction with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). While the NTSB is almost entirely responsible for investigating an accident, it is not involved in the process of establishing regulations or enforcing those regulations. Instead, the primary responsibility of the NTSB lies in analyzing every aviation accident investigation it conducts in order to improve air safety.
The main group within the NTSB that actually conducts an investigation is called the Go Team. The goal of the Go Team as first responders is to reach the scene of an aviation accident as soon as possible in order to begin recording evidence. The Investigator in Charge (IIC) of a Go Team is always a senior investigator with considerable experience in both the aviation industry and the NTSB.
Each investigator that makes up a Go Team specializes in very specific areas of investigating aviation accidents. This protocol allows highly specialized, trained individuals to work together to uncover the highly complex issues that lead to an aviation accident.
